Hi All, I am a new to the forum & non member living in London the UK. The first Ridout is recorded as attending a Manorial Court in Montacute Somerset in 1247.There are about 700 now in the UK nearly 8000 in the States and I recently learnt many in Newfoundland. Two news items. There is a Ridout project now in Family Tree DNA, I have just submitted my tests. I have written to 50 Ridout’s in Somerset & Dorset inviting them to participate.
I am working with the Somerset & Dorset FHS to make available the archive of Bill Ridout of Berkhampstead who died in 2008 Bill collected of the order of 90,000 records of the Ridout family including all church Bapt., Marr.Death.for Somerset & Dorset, Probates etc. All National BDM’s up to 2006. There are technical problems to overcome but it is anticipated that SDFHS will be able to make these available on the web in due course.

Will advise when data becomes available on web.
In mean time Have a look at the reduced fee offer for DNA tests at ” Family Tree DNA”

I am also a visitor to the site. I am I Ridout from Toronto . According to my amateur investigation there are more Rideouts in Newfoundland than in the UK so it’s important to get DNA tests from you. I think we all came from Dorset but it is important to confirm it. Family Tree DNA has a special file on male Rid(e)outs and a reduced rate until December 31

Hi Barry, this is the oldest I have in my tree.. this is as it appears on his headstone in Cape Freels United Church Cemetery…. John Rideout died 1863 Mar 22 age 69 Native Of Bradford,Dorsetshire,Eng.(Inhabitant Of Cape Freels 40 yrs) Yes there are a lot of Rid(e)out’s in Newfoundland in many different areas, not all descended from this man… 😉 Regards… Cyndi

Hi Barry I am interested in my British heritage both Bond and Thornhill. I also have information on Rideouts in NL. Many originated in Pass Island, Fortune Bay NL area. I have Rideout in my tree somewhere most likely tied to Bonds either Frenchmans Cove or Garnish in NL. The earliest I know of Rideout was James married to Sarah of Pass Island early 1800 circa. Try this free NL Geology site http://ngb.chebucto.org/. NL doesn’t seem to have much in records prior to mid 1800 era due to fire destruction but there is more information in public archieves. Would appreciate any help to trace Somerset area. There is record of Samuel Rideout married to Sarah Bond (Frenchman’s Cove) Other Rideouts moved to NOva Scotia and Glouchester, Mass, US. Sarah Bond was most likely daughter of John or Abraham Bond of FC and my own Grandfather ancestry. Suffice to say Rideout/Bond/Thornhill history cannot be traced earlier than 1800 era on this end. Good luck with the hunt.

    Hi Barry,
My grandmother was a Rideout from King’s Point, NL. Her father was Giles Rideout from Tilt Cove. His father was Joseph Rideout from Rogues Harbour. Sounds interesting! A post on genealogy.com indicates that Joseph immigrated to Newfoundland from Dorset. He was born to Joseph Rideout (Holnest, Dorset) and Elizabeth Bartelott (Winterborne, Stickland, Dorset, England) who were married on Jan 26, 1775 in Holnest, Dorset, England.
It would be great to touch base with any British relatives!
    Cheers
    Greg Mitchell.

As a matter of interest, there has been Rideouts in the Whales Gulch and Twillingate areas of Newfoundland since at least the early 1800s or earlier. One Newfoundland genealogy site that has a to baptisms from the early 1800s is the following: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cannf/spg.htm

    Sarah Bond was a Rideout.
Her parents were Matt and Martha Rideout
