In 1915 the Newfoundland government created the Permanent Marine Disasters Fund. Part of its purpose was to provide financial relief to the families of those lost at sea in Newfoundland waters.

Does anybody happen to know where to find records of beneficiaries of this fund?

    Thanks,

    – David.

Hi David, It might be at the University – I have found names listed in newspapers for certai n area distributions, might have been earlier disaster funds though.

David, Did you ever get a source for finding a list of those who received financial assistance through the PMDF? There are some letters at The Rooms Provincial Archives Division (GN 2/5/195). I looked at them a long time ago, but there may be some names, or at least enough to figure out who was making a request. If you find a list, I would appreciate knowing about it.

There are also financial and other records for the fund at provincial archives (GN 159.38
1931-1934) and some reports (no names) appeared in the Journal of the House of Assembly.

Hi Suzanne. No, I haven’t yet found any details about PMDF applicants and/or beneficiaries. Thanks for the references that you’ve cited at the provincial archives. I’ll take a look at them before long.

    – David.
