During a recent visit to Newfoundland I visited The Rooms and was able to confirm my grandmother’s birth at Crawley Island in 1911. I was also, luckily, able to trace out her siblings, parents and grandparents as well as other relations. It seems that 5 Murphy families lived on the island until a date I have yet to discover. My grandmother, who never spoke of her early life in Newfoundland, only that she was born in the “country” and moved to the “city” at age 10 associated herself and her siblings with Antigonish, Nova Scotia. It is clear to me that the family left Crawley Island shortly after her birth, then lived on the mainland in Long Harbour until 1921. What remains a mystery is why they left. What is also a mystery so far is if I have relatives still living in Long Harbour or the surrounds. I’ve searched the census data and have traced out my great grandfather’s sister, Bridget (Murphy) Mullins who moved to Corner Brook by 1935 living with her son John who had children that may still be in that city. I believe my great grandfather’s brother James remained in Long Harbour having a large family….Any help or guidance will be much appreciated.

Many of the remote communities in NL were resettled during the 60’s. It was a government program to “better serve” the population, by moving families to larger centers. Life in remote communities could be very harsh, and getting supplies was sometimes hard, and expensive. My fathers parents were born on Crawley’s island and his Grandparents still lived there while he was growing up.

Looking for information & any pictures of the following: Peter Murphy about 1817-1902 born Iona, married Maria Barron of Mussel Hr/Port Royal. They married Nov 4 1837 in Argentia. Witnesses to marriage were Lawrence Barron & Anastasia Barron. Children that I have are: Lawrence born 1846 Long Hr died 1906 Cape St. Mary’s, Mary Margaret born 1848 Long Hr, she married a Power. Anastasia born 1850 Crawley’s Island died 1917 Long Hr, she married Peter Kelly in May 1875. Mary Jane Anne born 1852 Long Hr, married Michael Bruce. Thomas born Iona 1858, died Crawley’s Island 1929. Peter drowned 1894. My connection would be on the Barron side. I believe Maria to be my 3rd great aunt, daughter of Lawrence Barron of Mussel Hr/Port Royal. Thanks for any help.
