I am looking for the death date and place of burial for my Great Grandmother Harriet Hodge Ferre who married unknowingly in bigamy, Francois Jean Marie Ferre on Nov 4 1893 in St Lawrence, Newfoundland, Canada. I can not find anything on her after he left her in Newfoundland and returned to his first and legal wife Julie Leroy-Ferre in France, where he died with her listed as his widow.
She was the daughter of Thomas Hodge and Sarah Saint Hodge and was christianed on May 22 1861 at the Burin RC Parish in Newfoundland, Canada. Both Harriet and Francois are listed in the 1921 Census (Firrie) and Harriet is listed in the 1935 Census (Ferrie) as a Widow despite Francois not passing away until five years later in Dol, France.
I would love to find her resting place and insure there is a proper marker for her.
Harriet Hodge Ferre was baptised on May 22 1861 (Burin Records)
Wife of Francois Jean Marie Ferre Oct 26th 1860 – Nov 28th 1940
They were married on
Daughter of Thomas Hodge 1823 to July 15th 1875

They were married in Lords Cove, NL on Nov 4 1893
Mother of Lelia Marie Ferre Drake born May 2 1895 (John Robert Drake)
Mother of John Francis Ferre born Apr 5th 1896 (Emma Fitzpatrick Ferrie)
Note the “i” was added after the children’s birth.June 19, 2024 at 1:44 pm #6944Debbie WisemanMemberHi Shawn,
I looked up a few places and can’t find any info. There is no stone listed on StonePics, however that just means there was no stone that could be read a few years ago when they were cataloged.
Are you sure she stayed in Newfoundland? Many times, older widows would move to the US with their grown children, either NY or Mass.
BTW, not sure if you know but sometimes “widowed” would be listed when the husband abandoned his wife and family.

Yes she remained in Lord’s Cove Newfoundland where her only two children lived and had families. she did have a sister in St Pierre, a French Island off the island of Newfoundland but I can find no evidence of her having moved there. I suspect as she was Catholic, she would have been buried as Hodge or outside the Graveyard. I hope to go down to Newfoundland in September and do some physical research of the area. I am just stunned that no one seems to know anything about her death or burial.
hopefully I will find a stone.
Thank you for your email
