I am researching the families of Philip Maher, born around 1830, and Johanna Franey, born around 1835, in St John’s, Newfoundland. Johanna’s parents were John and Bridget Franey. They were both born in Kilkenny, Ireland.
Philip’s parents were James and Mary Maher.
Philip and Johanna both immigrated to Gloucester, Massachusetts. They were wed in Boston in 1858.
Johanna had a sister named Margaret who also immigrated to the Boston area and wed a man named William Troy. It appears that there was also a brother named Michael Franey.

Their marriage record on the Americanancestors.org web site indicates that they were married in Boston on Christmas Day in 1858. I’ll be happy to send you the image of the record. Please contact me at joe-apg@norwoodlight.com.

Suggest that you register for a free account on Americanancestors.org home page. Massachusetts Vital Records (Births, Marriages and Deaths) are available up to 1914.

I have looked for US Census records for Philip and Johanna Maher for 1860, 1870 and 1880 without any luck. Did they go back to Newfoundland?

The Philip Maher and Johanna Franey marriage record from Americanancestors.org is the image for this document.

Most Massachusetts marriage records show a street address for the official who performed the marriage. I use to the address to link back to a rectory or parsonage etc. Unfortunately, lacking a street address, the Boston address for 1858 could be a number of parishes – many of them are now closed.
