Looking for information and names of both the victims and the other 3 survivors of the wreck of the schooner AZARIAH on March 16, 1831 off Baccalieu Island, Conception Bay. Schooner was owned by WILLIAM MUNDEN of Brigus; Captain John BONNELL/BUNNELL (c1768-1831) drowned in the disaster. The one survivor known was John Newall (Noel) who gave the report to newspapers of the event. Sadly 19 men perished. William Munden was son of AZARIAH MUNDEN (thus the schooner’s name) and William’s wife, Elizabeth, and the Captain’s wife, Mary (1772-1841), were sisters (daughters of ROBERT KNIGHT & SUSANNA SPRACKLIN). Apparently, many of the orphaned children were shared out to other families for financial reasons – no information if this was for an extended period of time or formalized by adoption. Does this story ring a bell for any member of the FHSNL? The Cupids Historical Society would like to flesh out this story for a possible memorial in Cupids.
