    Hello,
I am researching my husband’s paternal line for him. His grandfather was Michael J Curran b 1882 in Conception Harbor – I have found a baptismal record that lists his parents as Patric Curran and Kate Larrissey. According to my husband some of his relatives there are also named Costello. Can any one tell me anything about Patrick and Kate? If this is the right couple I would like to know who their parents were and where they were born. We have hit a brick wall.
    thanks for any insight, Victoria

So in further research it seems that Catherine and Patrick may have moved to Wood Island at some point. They were buried in the graveyard at the Wood Island RC church and the note says Catherine’s headstone (d1932 at 91 yrs) was sponsored by their daughter Johanna Costello.

I hope this doesn’t muddy your research waters! I am also researching the Costello families from Kitchuses, Conception Harbour since my mother was Agnes Mercedes Costello, daughter of Bob and Bridget.

” When it was decided to appoint a Sub-Collector of Customs to Woods Island in Bay of Islands, which was the center of the fishery in that area, three names for the position were put forward. Bishop McNeil recommended my father. On the 26th of September 1905, T.M. Costello received his Commission as Sub Collector at Woods Island, granted and signed by Governor, Sir Michael McGregor, Government House, St. John’s. In May 1906, the Costello family moved to Bay of Islands and took up residence at Woods Island. This position my father maintained until his 69th birthday in the year 1938. The last eleven years of his life were spent in retirement at Curling. The orphan boy of 100 years ago, became the father of seven children, one boy dying in infancy and another died another died while still in High School at the age of 15. Today 28 years after his death, three of his children are still living. The eldest of the Costello family, Martin now 82, lives in Philadelphia, a daughter, Mrs. James Furlong lives in Curling and another son Rev. C.S. Costello, Administrator of St. Anne’s Parish, Conception Hr. ”

    Hi Terry,
Yes, that is the son in law of Patrick and Catherine Larassey. I managed to find the Curran headstones on Wood’s Island on a trip to Newfoundland last fall.
I still have been unable to locate the marriage record for pat and kate nor their baptisms.
I have a newspaper record of the awful boat sinking that killed Timothy Costello’s father, brothers, and cousins. Awful that.

If you would like to track down your ancestry I have a Facebook page dedicated to Conception Harbour (Cats Cove).

The names Curran and Laracy are still within the town and I am sure you will get the answers you need.

Here is the link to the page.
