I am looking for information to link Thomas Searl of Bell Island (1749-1819) to ancestors in England. In the Beautiful Isles book John Hammond says that people said that he came from Kent but I can find no evidence of this. Others have linked him with Frances Barrell Searl (wife Anne) B. Aug 1720 St Mary at Lambeth, Surrey, but I would like some proof to support it. The headstone at the old cemetery overlooking the Beach is very expensive and would suggest he came from a wealthy family. Anyone researching the Searles?
    I have a tree on Ancestry.com Searle_NFLD_Family.

I am also descended from Thomas Searle of Bell Island, through grandson Benjamin and Mary Ann Parsons. Unfortunately I don’t have any further information of the validity of the “Somerset, Kent” detail. Have you learned anything since you posted this?

Natalie – Sorry I did not get the message and just found it now. I am still pursuing the idea that Rev Hammond had which is the Searles were from Kent and the possibility it was Devon because most of the fishermen from England came from the west country. I have a tree in Ancestry under my username CJCavendish which is public. Living people are not visible but you can check out what I have done so far. I have the Searles as coming from Surrey at this time and as having a boat building business. Not a lot of proof these are the right Searles though. My email is cathyc@tx.com if you want to contact me.

    Thanks for posting.
