William Merchant(abt 1852-1905) from New Perlican and possibly the son of a Thomas Merchant. William was a blacksmith as was his father. William lived and worked in Hant’s Harbour. He married Annie Howell (abt 1948-1890) and had three children. Corbett(1870-abt 1907)Mirriam(1873- ?)Emily(1875-?). All three children moved to Chelsea,Ma between 1891-98. Annie died in 1890 and is buried next to William in Hant’s Harbour at the Old United cemetery.

I have no information on Annie Howell other than her dying in 1890 and being the mother of the three children.

I have no information on William Merchant other than a couple directories and his remarriage to Elizabeth Bessie Pitcher and his death in 1905 from Bright’s disease.

Corbett Merchant is my GGrandfather. He came down to Chelsea,Ma in 1891 and married Mary Jane Burke (1863-1947). I have information from her mothers side Susannah Ash,but nothing on her fathers side except his name was Thomas Burke.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Corbett Merchant and Mary Burke Merchant.

Attached is a TIF file for the 1900 Federal Census.

The 1900 Census Record indicates that they came to the USA in1891. I can not find a Border Crossing record or a Passenger Manifest or a Marriage record for them in Massachusetts. I suspect that they were married in Newfoundland.

The image file below shows the Merchant family’s Census record for 1900 from ProQuest’s Heritage Quest database. See lines 44 – 48.

William Merchant may have married Elizabeth Ann Howell 1852 daughter of Francis Howell and Grace Fagnor of New Perlican. (They came from Carbonear) If not her they may of had another daughter. Ann is a name that is very common in that family
