Hi Brenda, thank you so much for filling me in. I recently received DNA information that placed my ancestor Martin Canning’s family
(MC Planter of Sound Island) originally from the area of Bri,County Wexford Ireland. I also received DNA information that placed his wife Bridget Murphy’s family originally from Wexford Town Ireland. I’ll check out the rooms and see what they have for Canning genealogy, thank you for that. At the mo I’m trying to find the original Canning homestead, and it looks like it might be in the enniscorthy area close to the Slaney River. x

    Hi Brenda,

I’m a descendant of Martin Canning from Sound Island and his wife Bridget Canning (Murphy), and I’m currently located in Ireland. Martin was born in Wexford Ireland circa 1795 and died in Piper’s Hole around 1855. His wife Bridget Canning (Murphy) was born in 1811 (Wexford) and died in Deep Cove circa 1885. They had a son Peter Canning who was born on Sound Island May 30 1843 and died in Presque “of old age” (according to the records). Peter Canning got married to Mary Ryan; she was born in Presque around May 3 1849 and died December 13 1913. Peter Canning lent his son Bernard Canning – Bernard moved to Merasheen – his boat while he was sick. My great grandfather (Bernard) was a very young Captain.

If anyone can help me with any information about Martin and Bridget Canning of Sound Island and their son Peter Canning I would really appreciate it. I would love to know where Bridget and Martin are buried, and if they had siblings. Also I would like to know if Peter Canning (1843) had siblings. Any information about the CANNING family from Sound Island, Presque would be greatly appreciated. Likewise if I can help anyone with information they need, please let me know. Peter (1843), Mary, and “James Canning” (born around 1850) are buried at St.Kyrans. I have a lot of family buried in Presque, mainly my great grandfather’s (Bernard Canning) siblings and wives, as well as others.

    Many thanks,

    Cat Canning
