I have Harris family in Newfoundland through my grandmother Mary Grace Harris 1901-1930. Her father was John Harris- businessman and member of Govt St. Johns. Father William Harris Builder St Johns around Monkstown Road, William Harris Ferryland m Catherine Saunders, Rev John Harries -Anglican, St Johns -originally from Haverfordwest Wales – died 1810 at Anglican Church St Johns. The Harris family became Catholic in Ferryland I believe. There was a request for permission for Anglican William Harris to marry Catherine Sa(u)nders in 1811 in the Colonial Records. Subsequently, church records showed Catholic BMD. Let me know if I can be of help.

Whew!! it’s like a Smith family! So, things I know for certain is my grandfather /Dads father was named Henry Reuben Harris or Reuben. Grandma was named Alice Victoria Harris. I don’t know her maiden name. My Dad had several brothers and sisters, Cecil, Johnny, Mabel and, Sandra…I think?

My Dad was born in Port aux Basques. born 1941

so, far I don’t recognize any of the names posted. Ive asked Dad and doesn’t remember or recognize the names either. Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot he remembers these days.

Thanks for your response!! I know I have cousins and grand nephews and nieces in an around N.L.

Have you checked the 1945, 1933, and 1921 Census of Newfoundland for Port aux Basques in the Burgeo-LaPoile District?

Port aux Basques 1945 Census of Newfoundland

The NGB site (linked) also has possible marriage(s) for your paternal grandfather – see the B D M W > Vital Statistics pages for Burgeo-LaPoile. Hint: see 1901-1905 and 1917-1920
